Sahel Initiative

The countries of the Sahel, and those adjacent, face a complex series of interconnected security and humanitarian challenges. The region’s long-standing political, economic and humanitarian vulnerabilities, combined with the crisis in Mali and the spread of insurgency, make access to unbiased news and information essential.

The BBG has responded by increasing its reach throughout the Sahel region. In the past year, new FM transmitters were added in in Mali, Nigeria, and Mauritania. In its FY2014 budget request, the agency included an additional $8 million to counter violent extremism, with particular focus on the Trans-Sahel region of Africa. The BBG also continues to provide programming in English, French and Arabic, as well as local languages, throughout the region.

In addition to radio and TV, the agency uses innovative ways of informing and engaging people in the region, with tools such as Mali1, an interactive voice response tool to make reliable news and information available on mobile phones.
