Malaysian cartoonist arrested, facing additional interrogation

Well-known Malaysian cartoonist, Zulki Anwar Ulhaque, better known as Zunar, faces police interrogation on December 30, in retaliation for his cartoons which have criticized the government for corruption and abuse of power. Zunar has been arrested twice in as many months and is charged with “endangering parliamentary democracy.”

In November, Zunar was arrested and several of his cartoons were seized. On December 17, during a fundraiser being held to compensate the financial loss of those seized cartoons, he was again arrested and cash was seized. Zunar estimates his combined losses from the cash and cartoons at $20,000.

Zunar is a contributor to Benar News, which is affiliated with Radio Free Asia. According to his lawyer, he faces up to 43 years in prison.
