2009 Annual Report

2009 marked the Broadcasting Board of Governor’s 10th anniversary as an independent federal agency, an important milestone in fulfilling our mission to reach key audiences in strategically important countries.

BBG has continued to support national security priorities by providing reliable and balanced news and information through radio, TV, the Internet, and other new media to more than 171 million people overseas. The Agency’s broadcasters give audiences news and relevant information in countries where media are not free or are not fully developed.

The growing use of mobile devices and new media platforms offer exciting opportunities to the BBG to respond to breaking news and events. BBG broadcasters are quickly adapting to these emerging technologies, providing audiences with accurate information on the media platforms they prefer. Despite the challenges of media blackouts and government crackdowns, BBG broadcasters stood apart as independent sources for reliable and objective news throughout the year.
