Radio Broadcast Training, Murree, Pakistan

FM Broadcasters and university representatives across Pakistan participated in a five-day workshop organized by the Voice of America and the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF). The workshop aimed at training journalists in understanding concepts and operations of community radio stations, increasingly important in the wake of a 2005 earthquake.

Sessions included the establishing community radios, news, ethics, management and financial viability. Among the trainers were Zane Ibrahim of Bush Radio in South Africa, Razi Rizvi of VOA’s Urdu Service, and Arnold Zeitlin, former AP Bureau Chief in Pakistan.

One day, participants traveled to Bagh, an area especially affected by the 2005 earthquake. There, press club members spoke on relief efforts and expressed appreciation for the international broadcasters’ news coverage in the aftermath of the earthquake.

The session concluded with a focus on the future of community radio. Participants drafted a declaration calling for the Pakistan Electronic Media Authority, to allow further dissemination of information. They also supported creation of more FM radio stations and backed the idea of further training.

Samira Khan, an assistant producer, said, “For me, the workshop was a tremendous leap forward and knowledge and skills.” Similar statements from other participants reflected the success of this workshop.
