Twelve radio journalists from Mozambique participated in a five-day journalism workshop in Maputo. The workshop, led by David Hume, sought to inform the journalists on the basics of reporting as well as recent trends in radio news.
Many of the journalists became reporters after working in other fields, and therefore learned informally from peers and editors. The workshop endeavored to provide important fundamentals of reporting. Sessions were devoted to defining and writing a news story, learning interviewing techniques, and adopting different methods of on-scene reporting. Furthermore, the importance of ethics in journalism in relation to story balance and sources was discussed.
The workshop also emphasized recent trends in reporting such as “podcasting” and audio streaming. With participants eager to learn about such technologies, Hume provided demonstrations on podcasting and on the use of free shareware that is available on the Internet.
After training, the journalists, equipped with a digital tape recorder provided by the workshop, earned practical experience conducting interviews of their choice in Maputo. The journalists then used these interviews, as well as health issues taken from stories in a previous newspaper, to write stories that were later edited, with suggestions for change discussed individually.
At the end of the conference, all participants were still eager for additional training, citing a desire to improve even further.
