Major Pakistani TV Networks Carry Scoop by VOA Urdu Website
April 01, 2010
On February 27, VOA Urdu broke news of the identities of two Pakistani national cricket players under investigation for match-fixing. Shortly after the exclusive story was posted to the Urdu Service website, www.UrduVOA.com, almost all prominent media in Pakistan and India picked it up and it led all major newscasts throughout the weekend. Images of VOA Urdu’s website and the VOA logo were splashed all over TV screens. Most analysts appearing on the TV channels commented that the story must be credible since VOA is a reliable news source and never publishes any story without verifying it first. The chairperson of Pakistan’s Senate Standing Committee on Sport announced on the TV that he had taken note of VOA's story and had summoned the chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board to appear before the committee to explain the serious allegation.
