- In late December 2005, Erkin Emet, RFA’s chief correspondent in Ankara got a threatening phone call. Mr. Emet called the Turkish police, who were able to confirm that a member of the Turkish communist party had made the call. Mr. Emet decided not to pursue the matter but the next day he was dragged from his car and beaten up by two Turkish men. No reason for the assault was given, but Mr. Emet believes that it related to his reporting on Chinese repression of the Uyghur people.
