Threats to Journalists: Serbia

  • Teofil Pancic, a Serbian journalist who is a columnist for RFE/RL’s Balkan Service, was beaten late on July 24, 2010 by unknown assailants while riding a bus.  Pancic was hospitalized and later released for a concussion and injury to his arm.  He has called the attack a “personally targeted assault.”  Pancic also writes for the weekly “Vreme,” and has been a well-known political commentator since 1999.
  • In June 2006, VOA stringer Igor Aleksic was assaulted by a security guard while covering a roundtable discussion at the parliament of Vojvodina province. The guard harassed Aleksic from the moment he entered the building, first verbally and then by attempting to take possession of his equipment and physically assaulting him.
