- Ernest Vardanian (-ean), an independent journalist who contributes to RFE/RL’s Moldovan service, was arrested by Transdniester security agents at his home in Tiraspol on April 7, 2010 and charged with high treason. He has been in pre-trial detention since. No trial has yet been set; if tried and found guilty Vardanian faces a prison sentence of 12-20 years. Vardanian’s arrest came days before he was scheduled to launch a blog for RFE/RL’s Moldova service.
