- Aklilu Solomon, former stringer for the VOA Tigrigna Service, was jailed for 18 months in 2003 and 2004 after filing a report for VOA that contradicted a government version of events in Eritrea. After his release, he was put under house arrest. He managed to flee on foot to Ethiopia in December 2006, and is today living in the Shimelba refugee camp, near the Eritrean border. Aklilu remains in Shimelba as of October, 2008, but there are indications he may receive asylum in the United States. VOA Tigrigna Service stringer Senait Habtu was ordered to stop reporting in March, 2008, and was permitted to resume reporting in October, 2008.
