Human Rights Day on Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa

Alhurra Human Rights programming The Middle East Broadcasting Networks (MBN) provided its Arabic-speaking audience with special programming for Human Rights Day on Dec. 10th. Alhurra interviewed Egyptian women from different backgrounds and discussed the Egyptian constitution’s impact on the rights of women. It aired a report on high profile soccer players who go to Qatar to play the sport, but are denied the ability to leave the country once their contract with the Qatari team ends. Eye on Democracy dedicated a segment of the Dec. 6th episode to explore human rights violations during 2013 in the Arab world.

The network broadcast three documentaries on Dec. 10th looking at human rights including The Boxing Girls of Kabul, Forbidden Voices and the Academy Award winning documentary Saving Face. Leading up to December 10th, Alhurra produced and aired a segment marking the 20 years since the establishment of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Office.

Alhurra Human Rights programmingRadio Sawa dedicated the Dec. 10th edition of its daily magazine program, Sawa Magazine, to human rights issues in the Arab Spring countries while Free Zone program examined whether human rights in the Arab world are improving or deteriorating.

December 10 is celebrated as Human Rights Day around the world and marks the anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
