Alhurra’s State Department Correspondent Michel Ghandour had an interview with Somali Foreign Minister Fowzia Yusuf Adam. During the interview she discussed the U.S. recognition of the Somali government for the first time since 1991. She said that, “today is a new dawn for us, we join the international community and this will open many doors for the Somali people who suffered for so long.” She went on to say there are many opportunities and challenges facing the Somali government. Adam identified security, institution building and developing the judicial system as the most pressing issues.
She also discussed the militant group al-Shabab, saying they are still in Somalia, but they are powerless. Adam stated, “al-Shabab is weakened and, we believe, on the way out of Somalia.”
