Agenda: The Broadcasting Board of Governors met at its Washington, D.C. headquarters on December 18, with a new format that featured an in-depth look at one of its networks and a panel discussion on media in the digital age with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.

The meeting consisted of two sessions. In the first, the Board voted on the full set of amended By-Laws reflecting changes previously adopted by the Board, as well as some proposed technical amendments; discussed and voted on an interim management structure for the International Broadcasting Bureau; and received public comments.

In the subsequent session, the Voice of America made a special presentation to the Board, providing an overview of the network’s worldwide activities. Afterward, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings was the keynote speaker for a panel discussion on the transition of international media organizations in the digital age.

Part 1 – Board Meeting

In the first session, the Board voted on the full set of amended By-Laws reflecting changes previously adopted by the Board, as well as some proposed technical amendments; discussed and voted on an interim management structure for the International Broadcasting Bureau; and received public comments.

Rob Bole moderated a panel made up of of Hastings, Macon Philips, Coordinator of the State Department’s Bureau of International Information Programs, and Tom Cochran, Chief Technology Officer at Atlantic Media.

WASHINGTON, DC – The Broadcasting Board of Governors today announced an interim management structure, took an in-depth look at the Voice of America and hosted a rich discussion on technology and innovation with key industry leaders.

The Board agreed to divide the responsibilities of the recently retired IBB Director among three members of the senior management team in order to help pave the way for a future Chief Executive Officer.  Under this interim structure, André Mendes will serve as Director of Global Operations, Robert Bole will be Director of Global Strategy, and Suzie Carroll will serve as Director of Global Communications. Together they will lead the agency in an arrangement that is expected to begin in January, pending congressional approval.

“The story of Netflix has many parallels to our challenges here,” said BBG Chair Jeff Shell in introducing Hastings. “It started out as a physical DVD-by-mail company, and now, Netflix is one of, if not the largest, streaming media company in the world. The parallels to the challenges of this agency as we transform, makes Netflix a great company to try to learn from.”
