BBG Broadcasters Nominated for Nine AIB Awards

Broadcasting Board of Governors’ broadcasters are finalists for nine 2012 Association for International Broadcasting Media Excellence Awards for 2012.

The short list for the awards, known as the AIBs, includes entries from 23 countries across five continents, reflecting the best of global TV and radio production and technology. Winners will be announced on Nov. 7 in London.

“We received an extremely wide range of entries from a large number of organizations located all over the world,” said Simon Spanswick, AIB chief executive.  “Most were of an extremely high standard which meant some hard choices had to be made in determining the shortlist for the 2012 AIBs.  Now it is up to our global panel of independent judges to deliver the names of the winners in this year’s competition,” he said.

Voice of America received four nominations:  Jessica Beinecke of OMG! Meiyu for International TV Personality; Steve Ember of VOA’s Learning English team for  International Radio Personality and Best Creative Feature/Radio for The Making of a Nation: Depression Arts & Culture; and Carolyn Presutti, Mike Kornely and Michael Burke,  Best Short Report or Documentary/TV for The Falling Man Family.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty received three nominations: Radio Mashaal, Best Live News Coverage/Radio for Boy’s Suicide Over School Uniform Shocks Pakistan; Vahid Pour Ostad of Radio Farda, Best Current Affairs Documentary/Radio for “Enferadi” (“Solitary Confinement”); and the Balkan Service’s Tina Jelin, Best Short Report or Documentary/TV, for One Family, Three Armies and a Lost Generation.

The Middle East Broadcasting Networks’ Afia Darfur was nominated for Best Live News Coverage/Radio for its coverage of Kabkabiya Violence.

Radio Free Asia made the short list for Best Investigative Documentary/ TV for An Invisible World – The Lives of Slaves in Modern Asia, a half-hour television documentary on the topic of human trafficking in Asia.
