VOA Hosts Workshop for Tanzanian Journalists

More than 20 Tanzanian journalists participated in a Voice of America (VOA) training workshop in advance of the October 2010 presidential election in that country.  The “Political and General Reporting Workshop for Journalists,” organized by the  U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam, was designed to help journalists improve their pre-election reporting.  Joan Mower, Director of VOA’s development office,  and Khadija Riyami, a broadcaster in the VOA Swahili Service, conducted the Sept. 27-Oct. 1, 2010, training session.

Journalists in the workshop  practiced reporting and interviewing techniques, reviewed the fundamentals of political reporting, and enhanced their Internet skills. .  They also examined ways in which new new digital platforms are changing the traditional journalistic landscape..

 “Your professional integrity is essential.  Your readers and citizens trust you,” said Ilya Levin, the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Officer in his closing remarks.   “Journalists must adhere to responsible standards. A truly free press is a responsible press

 The event on political and general reporting also supported the U.S. Embassy’s Mission and Strategic Resource Plan (MSRP).  The MSRP strives to govern Tanzania justly and democratically, while promoting the image of the American people as partners of the Tanzanian people.
